Cambridge Research Park Landscaping
One of the Cambridge Research Park's main objectives since work began on the 600,000 sq ft site, has been to create a relaxed, picturesque and work inducive enviroment. It was because of this that Allen Pyke Associates, landscape design consultants, based in Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey, were brought onto the site in order to fulfil the criteria to the best of their ability. From this, detailed landscape designs have been developed with both visual and ecological considerations in mind. Throughout the development of the park, nature conservation has been a priority issue, because of this Martin Newcombe, a consultant ecologist has been working along side the landscape designers. Particular attention has been paid to the dedicated wildlife area. Links have also been set up with the local wildlife trust who will shortly be taking over the management of this dedicated area. The park is set around a series of lakes and the development objective has been to create a landscape of fenland character with water as the unifying element. The research park has spent approximately 180,000 on timber structures around the lakes, which include timber benches and boardwalks through the reed beds. A bespoke timber bus-shelter has also been installed on the park as well as a timber pier folding out into the central lake. In addition, an artistic feature has been created on the pier comprising the mast and sails of a typical wherry boat that used to be seen regularly on the Norfolk Broads.
