Swans and Cygnets Return to Cambridge Research Park
1st July 1999 Almost exactly a year since they were relocated to a lake at the rear of the site, four swans and their 10 cygnets have returned to the main lake at the centre of the Cambridge Research Park. In July 1998, during the reconfiguration of the lakes, the RSPCA was bought in to help the developer and its on-site ecologist, Martin Newcombe, temporarily relocate the swans on a lake towards the rear of the park. During the development of the Cambridge Research Park various lakes have been drained and rebuilt in different areas. It was whilst draining these lakes that the swans had to be temporarily re-located and attracted considerable local interest. Since then the swans had moved out of the local area, but have recently returned to their old spot, the Cambridge research Park, undeterred by slight changes which have been made to their environment. Landscaping and natural environment are an important part of the Cambridge Research Park and the developer Suon Cambridge Ltd has spent over 500,000 on this aspect in the first phase. The return of the swans is great news for the developers of the park Suon (Cambridge) Ltd as it proves that all the time and effort they have put in to conserving the park's natural environment has paid off. Nic Rumsey of Suon Cambridge Ltd, says, " We are all really pleased that the swans have returned to the site, and hope that they continue to bring their cygnets to the safe environment of the research park."
