Listed Milestone Temporarily Dug Up on A10 Cambridge Research Park
May 1998 A listed milestone believed to be several hundred years old has been temporarily lifted out of the ground to allow a new roundabout on the A10 at the Cambridge Research Park, Ely Road, Waterbeach. The operation, which required listed building consent, was eagerly awaited by South Cambridgeshire District Council's Conservation Officer to establish whether it contained a capsule at the base of the stone. Nic Rumsey, director of Suon Cambridge Ltd, developer of the 45.3 hectare Cambridge Research Park said, "We are treating this historic stone with the utmost care and will be placing it back in the ground as soon as possible." The Cambridge Research Park recently gained detail consent for the 15,050 sq metre (162,000 sq ft) first phase and immediately signed local company Diomed as its first occupier to take 20,000 sq ft. A total of 600,000 sq ft of research and development facilities are expected to be developed over the next few years.
