Microsoft Moving to Cambridge
2 June 2025 Microsoft should consider Cambridge Research Park on the northern outskirts of the university city if it wants to set up a research facility quickly. Following reports in the weekend press of plans by Bill Gates's Microsoft to set up its European research operation in Cambridge, Nic Rumsey of Rumsey & Partners, says, "We welcome this news which underpins the city's reputation as one of Europe's leading centres for scientific innovation, but realistically speaking there is very little to offer if they want to move quickly. "The Cambridge Research Park is the only major campus project currently underway around Cambridge which, we believe, could accommodate the type of waterside campus setting that would appeal to a company of the calibre of Microsoft. "And perhaps of even more importance is its location on the A10 away from the notoriously congested ring road around Cambridge which will be an increasing problem as we move into the new millenium," adds Rumsey. The 100m research park is being developed by Suon Ltd and currently has outline planning consent for two-storey B1 research and development on 32 hectares (80 acres) allowing at least 55,741 sq metres (600,000 sq ft) in a waterside campus location. Work is shortly to commence on the infrastructure and estate roads into the project.
